How Does Randomization Work?
Researchers may activate a schedule randomization feature for select surveys. This generates a random, narrowed window of availability within the survey time slot. For example, a survey time slot may be scheduled for 1:00 P.M.-4:00 P.M., but the randomization window may be set for 15 minutes. The survey will automatically open up for 15 minutes at any point during the 1:00 P.M.-4:00 P.M. time slot.
Note: Randomized schedules are indicated by a grey "shuffle" icon in the bottom right corner of a survey window (see screenshot A below). You will receive a notification when the survey becomes available, including the amount of time you have to complete it (see screenshot B).

Additional Information:
The 'Schedule Randomization' feature in ExpiWell introduces a dynamic and unpredictable element to survey administration, greatly enhancing the validity and reliability of research data. This isn't just a scheduling tool; it's a methodological innovation that ensures the collection of more naturalistic and representative responses.
Randomizing survey availability within a specified time allows researchers to mitigate potential biases associated with fixed survey times, such as routine-based responses.
This randomization also adds an element of spontaneity, encouraging participants to provide more immediate and authentic reactions. The grey "shuffle" icon and timely notifications keep participants informed and ready, adding to the engagement and excitement of participating in the study.
Conclusion:
Moreover, this feature aligns well with Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) principles, capturing data in real-world settings and contexts. It improves response quality and enhances participant adherence by reducing predictability and routine fatigue.
The result is a more robust data set reflective of diverse moments and experiences. Therefore, the Schedule Randomization in ExpiWell plays a crucial role in elevating research standards, ensuring that the data gathered is both ecologically valid and scientifically sound.
Its integration in survey design represents a significant leap forward in pursuing more accurate and meaningful research outcomes, particularly in fields requiring a nuanced understanding of human behavior and experiences.
FAQ:
1) Why can't I take the survey even though I've entered the experience during the correct timeslot (see screenshot 1)?
- The survey follows a randomized schedule, indicated by the grey "shuffle" icon. It will become available later. You will receive a notification when the survey is available, and you can view the exact timeslot for completion (see screenshot 2). After completing the survey, you will see the confirmation shown in screenshot 3.

2) I saw that the second survey timeslot was scheduled for 3:30-5:00 PM (see screenshot i). Why does it show that I have missed the survey even though I entered the experience before 5:00 PM (see screenshot ii)?
- The survey follows a randomized schedule, indicated by the grey "shuffle" icon. Although the timeslot is from 3:30-5:00 PM, the survey is only available for a specific window within that period, in this case, 30 minutes (as shown in screenshot ii). Once this window closes, the survey will be marked as ‘missed’.
